FAQ about the Season

Can I phone Whitby Minor Baseball Association?

WMBA is a non-profit organization operated completely by volunteers. We do not have an operating office or a dedicated phone line. Our board members have  many different responsibilities and posting personal phone numbers is not practical.

What kind of baseball will my child play?

Our website contains a summary of each division; see House League > Divisions. Children start in 4U (Blastball) with a game that emphasizes baseball skills such as hitting, running, throwing and fielding. Each year during the instructional leagues, 5U (T-Ball) and 6U (First Pitch), new skills are learned to prepare players as they move into the age groups that begin to adopt the full rules of the sport, including the introduction of live pitching, through the use of machines at 7U. By 10U/11U (Mosquito), children start pitching and normal baseball rules apply with a few exceptions. These exceptions diminish in the older divisions.

How Long is the Season?

The length of the season depends on the division your child is in. 4U through 7U, the season begins in early to mid May and wraps the end of July. For divisions, 8U/9U and older, the season also begins in early to mid May and wraps up after playoffs in mid-August. This is dependent on Mother Nature and the ability to get games in with the weather that we face.

What do I get for my House League registration fee?

At the beginning of each season, players are provided with a uniform, including a team jersey and a hat. Player will also be provided a team and individual photo.

Age groups 4U through 7U will consist of an 11 week/11 game regular season, culminating with a final week consiting of a Skills Competition supported by Baseball Canada, known as Rally Cap. Details on the event will be provided throughout the season.

Age groups 8U/9U onwards will play a 16 game regular season over 12 weeks, with playoffs scheduled at the end of the regular season. Coaches will add practices and batting cage time as required.

An end of season event will take place for all age groups where players and coaches will be able to celebrate successes of the season and players recognized for the abilities and contributions.

I've registered for House League, when will I hear from someone?

You should be contacted by your coach in mid-late April to advise when your pre-season meeting or team gathering will take place. At the gathering, player uniforms will be distributed, schedules, team plans and players expectation discussed. If you have not heard from anyone by May 3 please email houseleague@whitbyminorbaseball.ca

What night of the week will my child play on?

Scheduling cannot be finalized until we know how many kids are enrolled in each division and we have confirmed diamond time from the Town of Whitby; however, each year, we try to put a tentative schedule of playing nights together.  That information will be found under our registration information section.

What division will my child play in?

Children are place in divisions based on birth years. Each season, the division associated with your child's birth year will be posted on the website under the House League news/events tab or the registration tab.

Can my child play in a different division than his/her birth year?

Players must play in the age group corresponding to their birth year. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the WMBA House League Committee - any such requests should be submitted via email to the HL Director prior to registration. Such requests should be submitted prior to April 1 of the current playing season.

Where will my child play?

WMBA plays on various diamonds throughout Whitby and Brooklin. Diamonds are assigned to divisions based on the size of the field and the capabilities of the players. As an example, older age divisions play on the larger, mounded diamonds. As our diamond allocation from the Town of Whitby varies from year to year, and our registration by division varies as well, we are unable to confirm in advance of the season the specific fields where age groups will play.

Can my daughter play baseball?

We welcome all players to learn the game of baseball. If your daughter wishes to play baseball, we are the solution! However, if her preference is to play ball with other girls, she may wish to consider Whitby Girls Softball or Whitby Rep Fastball (links are available on our Home page).

What equipment does my child need to play baseball?

At the first team meeting, your child will be given a team jersey and baseball cap. Other wise the only required equipment are comfortable pants, an approved helmet, jock or jill, baseball or running shoes,  and a baseball glove. All other ball equipment is provided by the league. *PLEASE NOTE, WE NO LONGER PROVIDE HELMETS*

Please see the Bat Rule Announcement under the House League Info tab if you wish to purchase your own bat.

Can my child tryout for Rep?

We welcome all players to try out to represent Whitby in the representative program. Tryouts usually take place in early-mid September; keep an eye on our website for details. Players must register and pay the basic registration fee & tryout fee for their division prior to the first tryout. If the player does not make a representative team, the registration fee is transferred to their house league season. If, after tryouts, the player chooses not to play rep or house league, they can request a refund. Our refund policy is available on our home page under policies. *PLEASE NOTE* Tryout fees are non-refundable*

What does the rep program involve? time? money?

Players chosen for the Rep program are required to pay an additional Rep surcharge, outlined in the Rep Policies and Procedures. They will be expected to play more games and attend more practices, sometimes up to five days a week during the season which may not include tournament play. Coaches determine if winter ball practices are expected of their players and this should be communicated to families during tryouts. In addition to the Rep surcharge, teams will be responsible for additional team fees to cover tournament costs, apparel, and other team expenses which will be paid by families or through sponsors or fundraising. Teams are not allowed to collect more money in sponsorship / fundraising that will be reasonably spent on the team during the season. Equipment purchased for the team must be returned to WMBA for distribution to that same team next season.
